Gor Mahia downs Vihiga United, who is next on the line?

Gor Mahia's Clifton Miheso

Gor Mahia resurgent in the league paid off as the league champions saw off Vihiga United. Trying to find themselves at the apex of the league table where they are used to be, the Green Army has so far registered three straight wins after the break. Coupled with their win over Congo Boys last weekend, Gor has now gone four matches without tasting defeat. In the build-up to the match at Mumias Complex, one thing was clear and spelt out for the Vihiga County sponsored club, Vihiga United. Defeating Gor Mahia was not going to be a walk in the park. True to their fears, the club failed to replicate their success over Gor Mahia as they did in the first round of the league.

With both clubs straining to cope financially, Gor Mahia had to only put behind their troubles and march forward. After missed chances, Clifton Miheso’s first-half goal was all that the mighty Kogalo needed in order to secure maximum points.

After the win for Gor Mahia, the club now moves past coastal side Bandari FC to the fifth position on the log. They however remain with one match at hand. If they manage to capitalize on the match at hand, Gor Mahia’s mission of reaching the top will highly be boosted. The Portuguese coached side is currently positioning their arsenals towards winning the league as the last resort that they can go for.

Vihiga United’s loss to Gor Mahia is more detrimental to the club. At the bottom of the league table, Vihiga United is seriously fighting the relegation axe. At the centre of the club’s predicament are financially related issues.

Instability at Vihiga United

The situation at the Vihiga based side is not a strange one. It’s a matter that only needs redress from the relevant stakeholders of the club. On the run to playing Gor Mahia, the county-sponsored club lost its coach who cited financial constraints and lack of cooperation from the management. Sammy Okoth lamented the ordeals under which the club was operating. The ordeals according to the tactician who has been to Ushuru FC, Karuturi FC among others, believes is the main challenge for the club.

For the majority of clubs in the country. Financial instability is not strange news. There is barely a club in the club that authoritatively showcase their financial prowess. Nairobi based side Wazito FC can perhaps be the only club that is financially stable in the league. This stability is a result of the fact that the club is deeply funded by the controversial businessman Ricardo Badoer. The Swedish since taking the reigns at the club has tried his level best to financially stabilize the club. He has so far done a tremendous job. We can only applaud his exploits.

Vihiga United’s visitors aren’t in any way better. Gor Mahia for this season has seen their players down their tools as frequent as possible. The main reason for the downing of tools has been insufficient funds for the champions.
