Ballon d’Or: Robert Lewandoski robbed?

Lewandowski - footballer

On 20th of August 2020, the organizers of the world’s top most individual athlete award announced that the award for this year’s Ballon d’or will not be conducted due to the prevailing global health situation. This is despite Lewandoski having a great chance of winning the award.

Organisers France Football cited issues that surround the deadly corona virus as the main reason for cancelling the sixty four year old award which at its inaugurate stages, was specifically meant for European players before other players from the rest of the world were allowed to contest for the award. Due to the current pandemic, they said that awarding the trophy will ‘not be worth’ as there will be no leveled playing ground for the contestants.

They go on to say, “We did not want to put an indelible asterisk on the prize list as ‘a trophy won in exceptional circumstances due to the health crisis of Covid-19’.

“Protecting the credibility and legitimacy of such a prize also means guaranteeing its irreproachability over time.”

Ballon d’Or has been an affair between Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Christiano Ronaldo of Juventus who has won the coveted trophy for the last twelve years. Lionel Messi currently leads having won the trophy six times while his closest challenger Christiano Ronaldo has won the trophy a record five times just one shy off his long time competitor.

Last years award had Barcelona’s Lionel Messi winning for the male category while the women category was won by US striker Megan Rapinoe who was a co-captain for the United States women team in the previous Women World Cup which the team won.

As the award is being cancelled for the first time in its sixty four years of existence, the most affected player to whom the decision seems to have really frustrated is none other than Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandoski. Going by the statistics of the last season and the yet to be finalized season 2019/2020, Lewandoski stands out as the one who was in a far much better position to clinch the coveted individual award.

He is being considered as the one who was in a better position to win the trophy having scored 21 goals and providing four assists in current campaigns. Apart from him being a scoring machine for his team, Lewandoski has helped his team win the the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal cup this particular season. His only closer challenger if the awards were to be conducted would have been Juventus’s Christiano Ronaldo to whose name records twenty goals and five assists during the current campaign.

Ronaldo and his team’s failure to win Copa Italia however diminishes his chances of winning the trophy ahead of Lewandoski if the event was to be conducted.

Having missed the trophy last year, Christiano Ronaldo was definitely determined to win the award just because things went south going by the communication that is currently raising suspicion among many football fanatics across the globe. The worst case is the case of Lewandoski who has worked very hard to win the trophy. To many fans of football across the world, Lewandoski has been robbed an opportunity to win the ballon d’or being that Messi and Christiano Ronaldo didnt look like promising candidates for the trophy during the ongoing season.

At the age of 31 years, Lewandoski might never have any chance to win the trophy as he has already entered an age bracket that might turn out to be a challenge for him to keep up the same momentum come the next season of the league. Coupled by the many young stars arising each and every day in the world of soccer, Lewandoski might just say bye to the coveted trophy without having a taste of it.
