MMUST teams dominate indoor games at Kibabii University

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) is a member of the KUSA Western Conference. With a membership of other nine universities, MMUST is a key figure both at the conference and national level. This can be attributed to their huge collection of trophies and medals that they continue to en masse from various sporting events. As COVID-19 came in, everyone was tipped off their comfort zone. Everything changed within no time and at the end of the day, the effect was bare and visible for all the crook and cranny.

KUSA through the Western Conference (WEKUSA) just like other conferences in the country have kicked off their programs. Albeit under tough circumstances as a result of the damaging effects of COVID 19.

The first event at the conference was therefore held at Kibabii University on the weekend of 20th and 21st of February 2021. Graced by six universities from the possible nine, the event together athletes from various sporting discipline. Among the universities that attended the first post-COVID-19 event in Bungoma County were, MMUST, Kaimosi Friends University College (KAFUCO), Rongo University, Kisii University, University of Kabianga and the host Kibabii University. Notable members of the conference who missed the event were Maseno University, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) and Tom Mboya University College.

Athletes from the six universities in the region competed in three disciplines which had been hosted at Kibabii University. The disciplines had Badminton for both men and women, darts for men and women and table tennis for both men and women.

MMUST dominates

Despite challenges occasioned by the current pandemic, MMUST teams managed to post the best results from the teams that participated in the event. The teams performed far much better than even the host who had a superior command of home ground back up. At the closure of the two-day event, the university which has hence given birth to Kibabii University and KAFUCO managed to scoop a third of all trophies that had been paraded at the Multi-Purpose Hall.

Among the MMUST teams that participated, table tennis ensured a double win over Kisii University by emerging victors for both the men and women categories. The university managed as well to emerge champions in the badminton women. The sterling performance didn’t end there, the men’s badminton managed to emerge the first runners up after Kisii University in a highly contested match with all manners of an emotionally packed room. To finalize on the fine record, the MMUST men darts team emerged second runners up thereby cementing MMUST position as a leading sports powerhouse at the conference level.

The university is currently channelling its energy towards winning more trophies, medals and accolades in upcoming events. Up in line are the conference games to be held at Rongo University on the weekend of the 27th and 28th of this month. The University through Mr Shisoka Akaka who is the Games Tutor and who doubles up as the conference chairperson will be hoping to cement their position at the conference level. This will make the university to start trading their eyes on other major events that are lined up at the national level.
